It’s Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month, and in honor of the wonderful rescue dogs out there, we’re introducing you to pets-in-waiting all throughout October. Today, we’d like you to meet Pebbles, an adorable border collie/pointer mix with a few extra pounds on her (more to love!).
This portly 4-year-old pooch isn’t fond of cats, and can you blame her? Adopted as a puppy, she was recently given up to the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, N.Y., by her owners because she didn’t get along with their pet feline.
In her few weeks at the shelter, Pebbles has already made a loads of human friends, including animal advocate and NSALA spokesperson Beth Ostrosky Stern, who posed for this photo on Oct. 8. – before adopting a very lucky cat named Charlie Boy with husband Howard Stern.
Cats and other canines may be her nemeses, but Pebbles certainly has a personality to love – she just needs to meet the right owner.
“She’s a real lover,” says Sylvia Ottaka, senior director of operations at the shelter. “She’s very happy-go-lucky and she’s always excited to see people.”
At 45 lbs., Pebbles needs an active owner to help her shed a few pounds, but overall, she’s a perfectly balanced dog: young enough to be playful, but not quite a puppy anymore. “She loves to go for long walks,” says Ottaka. “And loves to play in the park with the perfect companion.”
The housebroken dog loves children and would be a great family dog, Ottaka adds, and “Whatever family she ends up with, they’re going to have a loving, loyal dog.”
If Pebbles makes your heart skip a beat, contact the North Shore Animal League at (516) 883-7575 for information on how to adopt her.

Adopting a pet is an amazing experience – and a big decision! Before bringing a pet into your home it’s important to consider your family circumstances and do your research on breeds.
