A family from Solna, Sweden, found themselves trapped in a real creature feature, after discovering a giant rat living in their kitchen.

Three weeks ago, Erik Korsas and Signe Bengtsson started to hear scurrying sounds coming from the room, reports The Local. The couple figured the noises were caused by a mouse, until the ruckus began to grow louder.

Bengtsson discovered the culprit several days later, munching on scraps from the family’s kitchen garbage bin.

“It was right there in our rubbish bin, a mighty monster. I was petrified. I couldn’t believe such a big rat could exist. I couldn’t help but do the old classic and jump on the kitchen table and scream,” Bengtsson recounted to The Local.

The family’s cat refused to enter the kitchen and challenge the beast, so exterminators were called in to handle what the media nicknamed “Ratzilla.” Three traps were set for the mighty rodent, which was captured and killed shortly after the professionals left.

Ratzilla measured in at 16 inches – not including the tail – and 2.2 pounds. Exterminators believe the animal gnawed through cement and wood to get to a ventilation pipe that provided access to the home.
