Trisha Yearwood knows the secret to keeping her family close: Eating together.
“When I was growing up, suppertime, as we called it, was when the family got together around the table – that was our family time,” the country singer tells Redbook in its April issue. “Those dinners are some of the best memories of my childhood.”
An accomplished chef and cookbook author herself – her latest book, Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood, arrives in stores in April – Yearwood and hubby Garth Brooks keep up the same family mealtime tradition at their Oklahoma ranch.
“Having dinner together is something Garth and I have worked at making sure we do, because it’s too easy these days not to,” she says. “Now we’re all going to sit down and the cells are going to be turned off and there are not going to be any iPods playing into anyone’s ears. It’s time for family.”
Inspired by her family recipes, Yearwood decided to release another cookbook featuring some of her favorite dishes, including a crockpot macaroni and cheese (“I love cheese and I love cheese in everything,” she says) and even a recipe created by her hubby.
“He jokes how when he first got divorced and moved to Oklahoma and had the girls every other day, the three of them ate a lot of boxed macaroni and cheese and chicken tenders,” Yearwood says. Now, “he is really an experimental cook.”
So experimental, apparently, that he created his own dish, which he calls “the breakfast bowl.” In it? A pound of pork sausage, eggs, cheese, hash browns, tortellini and a pound of bacon – all mixed together!
“It’s not really a recipe,” Yearwood says of the dish. “It s more like a bunch of really great things thrown into a bowl. You really don’t need to eat again all day after you’ve had one. It’s pretty fantastic.”
