Amy Winehouse is the only modern-day pop singer who gets the Keith Richards seal of approval.
Asked by the British Mail on Sunday’s Live magazine which current artists he admires, the Rolling Stones legend said: “There’s only one person. That girl Amy.”
But the 64-year-old Richards, who has admitted to his own past problems with drugs, also offered words of warning to the troubled star. “That girl isn’t going to be around long unless she sorts herself out pretty quick,” he said. “Amy’s got to get smart.”
The Stones’ lead singer, Mick Jagger – who performed with Winehouse at the 2007 Isle of Wight festival – also warned that drugs can sap your musical productivity.
“It completely took over our lives creatively and we couldn’t do this and couldn’t do that,” he said of the band’s drug use in the ’70s. “You had to spend all your time trying to deal with the police. The same thing has happened to Amy Winehouse.”
